Emergency Medicine Interest Group
Special Interest Group: Acute Care College

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group consists of a group of medical students of all four years who work together with physicians from UCLA's Level One Trauma Center to both learn clinical skills and explore opportunities in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Pam Dyne, and Dr. Lynne McCullough of UCLA, along with residents from the Emergency Department, help to teach the students such skills as suturing, splinting, starting IVs, and setting up and reading ECGs. The group also meets to discuss topics like planning for residency, wilderness medicine, career choices in Emergency Medicine, and much more.
The Emergency Medicine Interest Group is the first and only medical specialty interest group that has Constitution implemented, and it is the biggest group in UCLA SOM. EMIG also supports a shadowing program whereby students follow residents during their shifts in the Emergency Room. Please refer to the shadowing section in the menu. Besides shadowing program, ride-alongs arrangement on the ambulance of UCLA EMS is also available.
The group meets once a month.

Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WSIG)
Special Interest Group: Acute Care

The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) is an organization where physicians, other health professionals, and students combine their profession with their passion for the wilderness. Founded in 1983, the Society's purpose is to present educational programs and publications that inform its members and the public about preventing, recognizing, and treating medical problems encountered in wilderness situations. As one of the aims of the WMS is to promote interest and encourage research in wilderness medicine topics and to develop the future leaders of the WMS. Currently the membership roster includes over 30 medical schools in the US, Canada, and UK. Membership is open to all medical students, residents, fellows and practicing physicians. The WMS offers elective training in various aspects of wilderness preparedness, as well as prevention and treatment of injuries and illnesses encountered during outdoor activities including exposure to extremes of altitude, temperature and weather as well as trauma and infectious disease agents. The organization will promote awareness of wilderness medicine and training within the School of Medicine through a lecture series, as well as expand the practical knowledge of wilderness activities through encouraging student participation in a variety of outdoor excursions.
