Greetings from the Director

Dear Class of 2011,

WELCOME to the UCLA Family!

The Office of Academic Enrichment and Outreach (OAEO) serves the medical student body by providing comprehensive academic retention services; enrichment activities which enhance the medical curriculum and promote effective communication across cultures, and support for medical student organization conference development. In addition, a substantial portion of our collective effort is devoted to conducting our nationally recognized academic preparation programs for promising disadvantaged premedical students.

As one of five units reporting directly to the Senior Dean of Students, we are fortunate to have a professional staff composed of Louise Howard, Assistant Director for Academic Services, Elizabeth Guerrero-Yzquierdo, Assistant Director for Outreach Services, and Theodore R. Hall, M.D., Assistant Dean for Student Affairs/Admissions, in addition to administrative personnel, part time student employees and myself. Our team maintains direct and frequent communication with students, appropriate faculty and other units within the School, the University and allied agencies to ensure a wide range of services to support your well-being.

After 26 years, I remain excited and encouraged by the brilliance and potential that each succeeding entering class brings to the arena. The greatest outcome we in the OAEO are seeking is that you succeed and fully enjoy obtaining your medical education. Then you can find a significant place to utilize your talents, training and passion for the greater good. Please utilize and contribute to our services.

Sincerely,
Patricia Pratt
Director

The mission of the Office of Academic Enrichment and Outreach is to improve the diversification, cultural sensitivity and effectiveness of the physician workforce, by identifying and preparing promising students, who by virtue of their abilities, concerns and vision, will be most likely to effectively serve as change agents, addressing the issues of modern medicine, particularly for medically underserved populations.
