Student Overview
Virtual Advisor takes information submitted through faculty and alumni profiles and allows you to search for specialty-specific advisors.
Virtual Advisor is intended to be a virtual experience. Some advisors will be open to offering shadowing or research experiences, but these are not the primary goals of the program.
You may match with one advisor at a time. Upon matching, an email will be sent to your advisor informing them of your selection.
You must release your current advisor before matching with a new advisor. An email notification will be sent to your advisor informing them of the release. Please plan to include a reason for releasing your advisor (i.e. 'Thanks for helping me out! I'm looking at a different specialty').
There is no limit to how many times you match and release.
It is the responsibility of the student to make initial contact with his/her assigned advisor.
Communications between students and advisors should be professional in nature.
Advisors should respond to advisee correspondence within two weeks (unless out of town, etc.). Likewise, students should respond to communications from their advisor in a timely manner.
Students may match with one advisor at a time.
Participants in Virtual Advisor are responsible for updating their profile. Annual notices will prompt you to update your information and release any advisors that you are not using.
Unprofessional conduct, including unresponsiveness, should be reported to the Office of Student Affairs.
Virtual Advisor is for information purposes only. The program does not intend to match students with residency programs, and Virtual Advisors are not held responsible for a given student's eventual match result.
Advisees that have participated in Virtual Advisor may be contacted in the future for purposes of quality improvement and overall assessment of the program.
The Career Advising pages
of the David Geffen School of Medicine, Office of Student Affairs, contain a wealth of online resources.
