CONSTITUTION

Article I: Name
- The official name of this Organization shall be the Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association, hereafter abbreviated as APAMSA.
- The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) APAMSA is an official Chapter of the National APAMSA.

Article II: Purpose
- To represent Asian Pacific Americans as a group with the health care community at UCLA.
- To be a resource for information on matters related to Asian Pacific American health care in regards to unique challenges, obstacles, and responsibilities.
- To provide a forum for discussion of issues concerning Asian Pacific Americans in health care.
- To provide a link between students and faculty of Asian Pacific American background.
- To provide opportunities for Asian Pacific American medical students to give back to their community(ies) through service.
- To promote awareness to the general health care community of the specific medical needs of Asian Pacific Americans.

Article III: General Nature of the Constitution
- UCLA APAMSA is established as an Organization by this Constitution.
- UCLA APAMSA shall conduct itself according to the provisions of this Constitution, the regulations of UCLA, the regulations of the Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA), and the laws of the United States of America.

Article IV: Membership
- The General Membership of UCLA APAMSA shall consist of UCLA school of medicine students and faculty who are affiliated with UCLA and who are interested in issues related to Asian Pacific Americans and health care.

Statement of Non-discrimination - UCLA APAMSA, in accordance with applicable Federal and State law and University Policy, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, medical condition, ancestry, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation or status as a Vietnam Veteran or special disabled Veteran. · UCLA APAMSA also prohibits sexual harassment. This non-discrimination policy covers organization membership, access to organization programs and activities, and the general treatment of members in the organization.

Article V: Officers The offices of President and Vice President shall be elected positions. Other officers may be appointed if not filled by election.
The APAMSA officers shall be but are not limited to (at least one of) the following:
- President: Oversees and coordinates officer and general meetings. Coordinates events and activities. Keeps in mind and maintains the purpose and mission statement of APAMSA. Serves as official representative of APAMSA to other organizations and contacts. Participates in the organization of the Minority Health Conference.

- Vice President: Asssumes responsibilities and duties of presidency in thepresidents' absence. Responsible for filling relevant forms (non-money related) with the SAO and funding approvals for the Medical Student Council. Responsible for organizing and setting up health fairs.

- External Vice President: Acts as a liaison with the undergraduate campus and APAMSA chapters of other medical schools. Representative/coordinator for undergraduate related APAMSA activities such as setting up a panel discussion for undergraduate pre-meds.

- Treasurer: Responsible for bookkeeping and all monetary affairs for APAMSA programs and activities as well as for the Minority Health Conference. Keeps staff aware of APAMSA's financial status and budgetary constraints at.

- Secretary: Records and posts minutes and attendance at officer and general meetings. Maintains order and agenda schedule.

- Publicity Chair: Advertises all APAMSA programs through fliers, posters, newspaper ads, e-mails, etc. Sends announcements, invitations, and information to all members and the general student population as necessary.

- Social Chairs: Plans social events, both within APAMSA and in conjunction with other organizations. Attends social events of other organizations as necessary to represent APAMSA.

- Community Service Chairs:

1. Hep B Chair: The Hepatitis B coordinator's responsibilities include: 1) collaborating with the LA County Hepatitis B task force to educate the Asian Pacific Islander community about the transmission of Hepatitis B and its associated health risks, by providing presentations at community centers and distributing information at health fairs; and 2) working towards the goal of providing vouchers for low cost or free Hepatitis B screening.

2. Bone Marrow Chair: Responsible for setting up and coordinating the biannual bone marrow drives. Work with members of the community and hospital to promote bone marrow donation. Set up informational meetings and informational tents.

3. South Asian Health Representative: The responsibilities of the South Asian liaisons are to: 1) Identify and foster communication with leaders/organizations active within the South Asian community. 2) Provide counseling/screening for important health issues prevalent in the South Asian community via health/community fairs. 3) To educate medical students about the health care disparities that afflict the South Asian community.

- Historian & Webmaster: Documents and records all APAMSA events through photos and/or videos. Prepare presentations that represent APAMSA activities and members. These presentations may include booth displays, scrapbooks, web-based, etc. Design and maintains the APAMSA website.

- Minority Health Conference Directors (2): Serve as the main UCLA APAMSA representatives to the Minority Health Conference Planning Committee composed of members from LMSA, SNMA, and MedGLO from UCLA and USC. Plan, coordinate, and produce the Minority Health Conference. These positions are appointed in the beginning of the academic year..

Article VI: Faculty Advisor
- UCLA APAMSA shall have at least one Faculty Advisor.
- The Faculty Advisor shall be consulted regularly to discuss and evaluate ongoing and future activities of the Organization.
- The selection of the Faculty Advisor shall be done in the following manner:
a. The officers may nominate any member of the faculty of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Epidemiology, and Public Health.
b. Members must be properly notified of the nomination and the time and place of the confirmation vote.
c. Confirmation of the nominee must be by a three-quarters vote of those present.

The Faculty Advisor may be replaced at any time in the manner outlined above, but otherwise may serve a term of indefinite length until he/she chooses to step down.

Article VII: General Meetings
- General Meetings shall be held at least three times during the academic year for the purpose of determining policies, schedules, and other official business and should be publicized appropriately. For each academic year, there shall be at least a first general meeting held during the first three weeks of the year, an election held before spring break, and a final general meeting or social held before the end of the academic year.

Article VIII: Voting
- The power to vote shall be accorded to members who fulfill one of the following criteria:
a. Attendance at least 3 events or meetings held during the current or previous academic year.
b. Possession, past or present, of an elected position within the organization.
- Valid voting is defined by the presence of at least three-quarters of the total UCLA APAMSA membership.

Article XI: Amendments

Once ratified, the Constitution may be amended only in the following manner:
1. Amendments to the Constitution can be proposed by any UCLA APAMSA member.
2. All members must be properly notified of the proposed amendment and the time and place for the scheduled vote.
3. Final approval of the proposed amendment must be by a three-quarters vote of those present.
