Sonia Morales is a second year medical student in the PRIME UCLA program through the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science at David Geffen School of Medicine.  Through this dual degree program she hopes to pursue a Master’s in Public Health or Master’s in Public Policy.  As a result of her research work as undergraduate and post-baccaleureate, she has an interest in Pediatric Oncology/Hematology and the disparities that exist within this particular Latino population.

I am currently a third year medical student. I enjoy being a part of LMSA because it allows me to give back to my community in a positive way, and has also given me the opportunity to make great friends that I consider to be familia. I have been involved with LMSA since my first year where I took on the position of fundraising coordinator. This past year, I was the conference co-chair for the 2009 LMSA Regional Conference. I am currently working on my third year rotations and hope to one day be working at an underserved hospital as a general surgeon. My hobbies include running, swimming, dancing, and dancing some more. I love listening to mexican music and hope to one day be able to play the accordian....did I mention I love dancing?!

I enjoy meeting new people and hearing about the great stories everyone has to share. I've been most inspired by accounts of hardship and sacrifice, and the actions people take to overcome challenges. For this reason, I am interested in improving health care for special needs populations and their families. Before entering medical school, I worked in research and program development for children with special needs, and got my masters in public health at UCLA. In my free time, I like jogging along the beach, reading Edgar Allan Poe, and working on a book about developmental disabilities that I intend to publish some day

I was born and raised in Arleta, CA. I am the eldest of three children and the first in her family to attend college. I received her undergraduate degree in Biological Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2003. After graduating from UCLA I completed two years of post-baccalaureate work at the University of California, Irvine as a participant of the Pre-Medical Post-baccalaureate Enhancement Program (PEPP). I am currently a second year medical student in the UCLA PRIME program at the David Geffen School of Medicine. I am interested in pursuing a master's degree in public health or public policy and plan to practice in underserved communities as a family physician.

Imported straight from the Caribbean, this island girl made her way out to sunny Southern California as a kid, growing up in the city of Rosemead. She is the youngest of 4 children and the only girl in the family. She graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and 2 minors, one in Chemistry and one in Microbiology. After working for two years, she went on to complete one year of postbaccalaureate work in 2007 through the Drew/UCLA Post-Baccalaureate Re-Applicant program, and found herself amidst a sea of bright, young minds in the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA’s Class of 2012. She is interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration, in order to successfully run her own business and utilize a portion of the profits to provide care for the underserved.
