Email : alexjimenez2@gmail.com Hometown : Orland, CA Undergrad Institution: UC Berkeley About Me : I was born in Los Angeles, but moved to a small town in Northern California when I was twelve. I then moved to the Bay Area where I studied biology at UC Berkeley, conducted childhood obesity research, and worked as a medical assistant. Now I'm back in LA for medical school and ready to make a difference. The Latino population is projected to triple by 2050 and account for 30% of the total US population. Already underrepresented in medicine, culturally competent Latino doctors are needed now more than ever to cater to a patient population whose healthcare needs are often underserved. Through LMSA I hope to play a role in diminishing the disparities that exist in healthcare and higher education. |

Email : abe91396@ucla.edu Hometown : Bell, CA Undergrad Institution: California State University, Dominguez Hills About Me : I graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2008 with a B.S. in Biology, after which I taught 7th grade Life Science at Hollenbeck Middle School in the city of East LA for a year. My desire to become a physician stems from the value of education instilled in me by my mother. I grew up dismissing the importance of education and had no real intention of pursuing it. I have my mother to thank for changing that. I remember seeing the effort she made to pursue higher education. Seeing this strong, beautiful, caring mother of four going back to school helped me see the importance of education. It is also the reason I want to go into pediatrics. It is my desire to be able to help as many underrepresented children the pursuit of higher education in much the same way that my mother helped me see it. |

Email : angemay@ucla.edu Hometown : South Central Los Angeles, CA Undergrad Institution: Harvard About Me : Born and raised in LA, the weather and diversity was something I completely took for granted until I left for the East coast. I recently completed my B.A. in Latin American Studies and a Certificate in Health Policy. I am now back in sunny Southern California as part of the Charles Drew Medical Education Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. This opportunity, as well as now working with the other incredible people in LMSA, are things for which I am incredibly greatful! I attended UC Irvine, graduating with a B.S. in Neurobiology in 2006. After graduating, I spent a year researching vocal brain development, then moved onto potential HIV vaccines. My interests lie in preventative care, medical education, and global health. I love traveling and exploring new places, interesting cusine, and laughing with friends and family. |
