Our goal is to help you navigate the residency application process using three key features: 1) Increase Knowledge, 2) Decrease Anxiety, and 3) Identify Appropriate Resources.
You will continue to work with Mitsue Yokota, Shamar Jones and Dr. Margi Stuber through Year 3 to make your career decision, then you’ll be transitioned over to work with Jason Bergschneider and Meredith Szumski for Year 4.
Our job is to walk you through the application, interviewing, and ranking process step-by-step throughout the year. We begin this process in Year 3 by offering a couple of optional meetings in the fall for you to attend to discuss letters of recommendation, evaluations, the MSPE (dean’s letter), etc. Then, right before the holiday break we’ll have a mandatory meeting for your class where some of that information will be repeated and instructions given for how to begin the process—including an assignment for winter break. This is the time when you’ll receive instructions about how to ask for letters of recommendation and information about where to find forms, etc. When you get back from break you’ll get information about the Colleges and scheduling for the following year at mandatory meetings.
We send regular updates and reminders about the upcoming meetings as the dates approach as well as weekly emails entitled, "Residency Updates from the SAO" which include the latest information, strategies, events, and announcements.
Current 3rd and 4th year students who want more information about the residency application process can check out more information on the 4th Year webpage: Offices & Resources --> Information by Year --> 4th Year

Match Results 2012
Congratulations Class of 2012 on your outstanding Match Results! Given the uncertainty of SOAP process (formerly the scramble) students were counseled to apply, interview, and rank more programs than usual—it paid off! We had our lowest number of unmatched students ever. In fact, 95% of US Seniors matched to residency positions this year—the highest in 30 years!

“Match Day Sees Increase in Residency Positions Offered to Medical Students”
A group of seniors (along with the SAO Staff and Dr. Parker!) surprised guests with a match day flash mob before the envelopes were opened. UCLA Today featured DGSOM’s flash mob.
