The series of Debt Management sessions was conceived not only to assist students with the management of their educational debt but also with teaching the elements of personal finance. We have established 12 sessions a year on financial topics identified by students through focus groups. Some of the sessions have been video taped for video streamed presentations so that students who could not attend could gain access to this important information 24/7. This year we are going to be upgrading this section of our web site making it more dynamic and interesting and hope to add new videos and update the old ones -- giving them a consistent look. Stay tuned.
As you know, most students are anxious about financing their medical education and the debt that results. We hope that these sessions will help students alleviate this anxiety and reinforce the benefits of obtaining an M.D. degree. Some sessions have been designed to assist students with the transition both to and from medical school. Other sessions are presented by credit professional to help students understand the impact of credit card debt and of credit reporting.
Smart Budgeting
This session focuses on short-term financial planning, guiding students through the process of creating a budget and managing finances. It features cost-saving tips and strategies to keep student loan borrowing to a minimum.
There are two versions of the session, a basic and advanced. The basic version was produced for Edfund and the advanced version is for UCLA medical students and residents.

Relocation: Issues and Tips
As you prepare to move out of your medical school apartment and into your new home for residency, there is a lot to think about, from finding a place to live in, to getting yourself there and settled in. Probably the most important thing to do on this process is to get well informed. There are many excellent resources online that provide advice and links to companies that provide the service you need. Many of you will find that the hospital where you are headed will be an invaluable source of information. Call the medical information office and current residents and ask them about housing: where to live, whom to talk to (I.e. realtors), ect. The residents will be particularly helpful in telling you where residents live, estimating commute times to the hospital, and giving you a sense of where you'll want to spend time away from the hospital. more ...
