Longitudinal Primary Care & ResearchClerkship
(PCO11 & PR011 – Drew/UCLA students only)
The Longitudinal Primary Care Clerkship is a required year-long clerkship for students in the CDU/UCLA Medical Education program. The clerkship consists of a bimonthly continuity clinical experience that offers students, under the supervision of faculty, the opportunity to learn how to provide patient-centered care to vulnerable and underserved populations.
Objectives
Students completing this clerkship will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Obtain a thorough, focused history and physical examination
- Formulate a differential diagnosis
- Develop a problem list and a management plan
- Identify, understand and utilize community resources in the management of patients
- Understand and utilize principles of ethno-medical science to provide medically effective, culturally appropriate care
- Identify and appropriately utilize Complementary/Alternative Medicine in the management of patients
- Incorporate prevention and wellness in all aspects of care
- Identify and appropriately manage patients who are homeless
- Identify and manage patients with low/inadequate health literacy
- Identify and manage non-English speaking (particularly linguistically isolated) patients
Format:
Students are assigned to the continuity clinic for a half a day session twice per month in groups of four to six students. Each student is assigned one comprehensive history and physical examination and one or two follow up patients per clinic session. Students are assigned preceptors who guide them through the patient encounter.
Evaluation:
Students evaluate the clerkship through the standard UCLA evaluation system. Faculty evaluation of students is done via the electronic evaluation system. Mid-cycle evaluation of students and feed-back is provided for improvement of performance.
Criteria for Letters of Distinction in Longitudinal Primary Care
“Pass with Letter of Distinction” will be given to those students who achieve a score on the written examination above the mean and whose evaluation is in the highly outstanding range for all assessed categories.
