Mission Statement
What are
the specific goals for this conference?
-
Present African
American, Asian Pacific Islander, and Latino cultures collectively as
one voice in addressing minority health disparities.
-
Raise minority
health awareness within classrooms, hospitals, and communities in
Southern California, one of the most diversely populated regions in
the U.S.
-
Educate medical
students, physicians, faculty, undergraduates, and communities on
minority health disparities and culturally sensitive medical care.
-
Address current
issues in minority health: what has failed, what is working, and what
is in store for the future.
-
Recruit current and
future physicians to adopt more active roles in promoting minority
health awareness.
-
Consider universal
health care within the context of minority health.
What
should attendees to walk away with?
-
Knowledge.
Healthcare professionals should be well-informed about minority health
issues in the context of universal health care and managed care.
-
Purpose.
Understanding minority populations, diversity, and cultural
differences underlies effective health care delivery.
-
Urgency. The
medical profession must prioritize minority health now, no matter the
ethnicity or the setting.
-
Empowerment.
Motivated physicians can make both immediate and long-term changes to
improve the quality of minority patient care and access.
Why are
APAMSA, LMSA, and SNMA doing this?
-
To promote
solidarity amongst UCLA and USC chapters of SNMA, LMSA, and APAMSA,
all of whom have unique perspectives on similar issues.
-
To provide a forum
for discussion on the difficulties and barriers facing physicians and
patients in minority communities.
-
To advance our
cause as ethnic medical student organizations that serve the many
different communities in
Southern California.
