Gerald S. Levey
Dr. Gerald S. Levey, a nationally recognized leader in both academic medicine and private sector medical affairs, is vice chancellor of medical sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and holds the academic rank of professor of medicine in the department of medicine. As vice chancellor of medical sciences at UCLA he oversees a diverse medical enterprise including the School of Medicine, UCLA Medical Center, and the UCLA Neuropspsychiatric Institute and Hospital.

Dr. Levey joined UCLA in September 1994, having previously served as senior vice president for medical and scientific affairs at Merck & Co., one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. He has held major leadership positions throughout his career, including serving as chair of the department of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1979-1991. He is past president of the Association of Professors of Medicine, was a member of the Board of Governors of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Levey is a member of the medical honorary society Alpha Omega Alpha, and is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and received his Mastership from the American College of Physicians in 1997.

Dr. Levey is an internist and endocrinologist widely known for his research on the thyroid gland and the heart. He was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator while at the University of Miami from 1971-1978. Dr. Levey has developed a particular interest in issues of the nation's physician supply and the role of generalist physicians, and served as co-chair of the National Study of Internal Medicine Manpower from 1981-1991.

J. Thomas Rosenthal, MD

Dr. Rosenthal is a urologist and was formerly the Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at UCLA. His accomplishments included substantial growth in the clinical program, achieving competitive NIH funding for clinical trials in transplantation to UCLA, and ultimately achieving research funding in excess of two million dollars. He received his M.D. from Duke in 1974 and completed his residency at the Lahey Clinic. He previously served as Program Director in Urology at UCLA, Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs and Executive Vice-Chair in the Department of Surgery at UCLA, and Director of the UCLA Medical Group before assuming his current roles. He is a past officer in a number of transplant societies.


Neil H. Parker, MD

Among his numerous responsibilities, Dr. Parker oversees medical student admissions, provides guidance for outreach services, assists in negotiation of affiliation agreements and regularly counsels medical students. Dr. Parker has shown his dedication to medical education through his chairmanship of the 1st year Foundations-Orientation course and the Medicine Subinternship elective for 4th years as well as serving as a cochair for the 3rd year Clinical Foundations course. He has also taught medical students as a tutor for both the Clinical Applications of Basic Sciences and the Pathophysiology of Diseases Case Studies courses. From 1981-1995, he served as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program before which he was an attending physician for residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Parker is hailed as one of UCLA's best instructors and consistently receives the highest marks from medical student and resident evaluations. He has twice been honored with the Outstanding Fulltime Faculty Award from the Department of Medicine in addition to receiving the UCLA Medical Staff Service Award. Dr. Parker is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a member of the national honorary medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha.

Dr. Parker received his M.D. degree cum laude from the State University of New York, Downstate in 1972 and joined the faculty at UCLA as Chief Resident in Medicine in 1977.


Paul Torrens, MD, MPH

Paul Torrens
Paul Torrens is Professor of Health Services, teaches courses in health services organization and financing, health services organization and theory, managerial processes in health service organizations and managed care. Dr. Torrens received his M.D. from Georgetown University and his M.P.H. from Harvard University. A physician by initial training, he has had a long career in the two areas of health care management and health care policy.

As a health care manager, Dr. Torrens has had many years of direct management experience in hospitals and health organizations. He has also many years of membership on governing boards of health care organizations of various kinds; he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of California, as well as the Board of PacificCare Behavioral Health of California. He is also a member of the Financial Solvency Standards Board, Department of Managed Care, State of California, and the Attorneys General Task Force on Charity Care. As a health policy expert, Dr. Torrens has served in a wide variety of advisory and consulting capacities to governmental and non-governmental organizations in all parts of the United States and in eighteen foreign countries.


Bruce Allen Chernof, MD

Bruce Allen Chernof, MD, FACP, currently serves as the Director and Chief Medical Officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, after serving as the Department's Senior Medical Director for Clinical Affairs and Affiliations since December 2004. Prior to his rejoining the Los Angeles Department of Health Services, Dr. Chernof served as Regional Medical Director for California Health Programs at Health Net, California's largest network-model managed care plan.

Dr. Chernof completed his residency and served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine for the UCLA-San Fernando Valley Program. After residency, Dr. Chernof completed a Fellowship in Medical Education at the UCLA School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from UCLA and completed his undergraduate work at Harvard University.

Currently, Dr. Chernof is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at UCLA, and serves as the Assistant Chair of the Medical Leadership College. Dr Chernof served as the founding Director of UCLA's five year combined MD/MBA Program. In 2002, the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA recognized Dr. Chernof with the Award for Excellence in Education for these innovative programs.


Jo Carol Hiatt, MD, MBA

Dr. Hiatt is Chair of the National Product Council for Kaiser Permanente and Chair of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) Technology Deployment Strategy Team. She is a partner in SCPMG and is currently Assistant Medical Director, Business Management, responsible for expanding market initiatives projects for SCPMG. Additionally Dr. Hiatt is a member of the national External Relations team working as a National Accounts Physician Market Leader.

Dr. Hiatt joined Kaiser Permanente as a general surgeon at Panorama City in 1984, later serving as Chief of Surgery at that location and member of the SCPMG Board of Directors. Dr. Hiatt received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and her medical degree from Duke University. She trained in general surgery at UCLA. In addition to her clinical degree, Dr. Hiatt received an M.B.A from UCLA's Anderson School of Management.

Dr. Hiatt continues to be actively involved in many surgical organizations, such as the Longmire Surgical Society, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the UCLA Dept of Surgery Executive Committee. She is the Chair of the Fellow Interview Committee for the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.


Michael L. Steinberg, MD

Dr. Michael L. Steinberg, FACR, is a board-certified specialist in radiation oncology. He is a founding partner of the Santa Monica Cancer Treatment Center and Cancer Care Consultants Medical Associates. Although Dr. Steinberg spends a majority of his time in the clinical practice of radiation oncology, he is also involved in clinical research and is the Principle Investigator for a Disparity in Cancer Care Grant from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Steinberg is a member of the Board of Radiation Oncology's national specialty organization, ASTRO, where he chairs the Health Policy Council for ASTRO.

Dr. Steinberg earned his M.D. degree from University of Southern California and completed specialty training in Radiation Oncology at UCLA. He is Chair of the Cancer Program Committee at Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center and is a member of the Physician Advisory Board for the Wellness Community in Santa Monica, California. In addition, he serves on the executive board of the IMPACT program for California which allows access to care for uninsured men with prostate cancer. In recognition of his contribution and professional leadership in the field of radiation oncology, Dr. Steinberg was elected Fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American College of Radiation Oncology.
