Thanks for your interest in the STTP
Earl Homsher, Ph.D.

Medical students have shown increasing interest in the STTP at UCLA. The program can accommodate a limited number of positions for 1998, and you are urged to apply. The stipends will be derived from a variety of sources to provide $317/week. Students will be notified of appointments at the earliest possible date subject to verification of funding sources.

The STTP is designed to provide either initial or continuing basic or clinical research for first and second year medical students. To qualify, the student must have demonstrated satisfactory academic progress to the time of application, and the complete the accompanying form detailing in the student's own words the specific aims, experimental plans and methods of analysis of the proposed research. The mentor (the UCLA faculty member) shall complete the mentor portion of the accompanying form specifying who will immediately supervise the student and by whom and how frequently the student's progress will be monitored.

The student is expected to actively engage in all aspects of the proposed research project. Students should participate in any lab journal club. An abstract of each student's research, prepared by the student, will be required before the end of the short term training period and a poster presentation of the project is mandatory at the Presentation and Awards Ceremony, July 31, 1998.

Proposals will be evaluated and rated for funding on the basis of the quality of the proposal itself. Once a proposal has been approved for funding, the student must work on that specific proposal and with the mentor specified in the application for the duration of the summer experience.

The STTP is a full-time commitment for participating medical students, and vacations of any length of time are NOT permitted during the 10-week period of short term research. Program dates: Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, July 31, 1998.

The required application form is attached. Please complete the form in its entirety. Please type the form. Additional information may be obtained from Dr. Earl Homsher, Director of the STTP (825-6976), or from Fran Kissel in the Student Affairs Office (825-6281).
