Mobile Device / PDA Requirement -- CLASS OF 2012

Requirement: The Class of 2012 must have a Mobile device / PDA for the 3rd and 4th year of medical school loaded with the required software.  The 3rd year starts on June 21, 2010 with Clinical Foundations.  The devices listed below have been specifically selected as they run the required software.  Please note that a phone, data plan, wi-fi or blutooth is NOT required.

It is highly recommended that you purchase your Mobile device / PDA by June 14, 2010 to allow time to install the software.  You must arrive to Clinical Foundations on June 21 ready to use it.

Software Requirement: 

• Pharmacopeia (Epocrates Rx and Essentials is provided free at the beginning of your 3rd year; no need to purchase)
• DynaMed (free from BioMed Library site)
• Medical Calculator (select one)
• PDF Reader (select one)
• Security Program
  You will want to secure the data on your Mobile device / PDA whether it is personal or school related.  Your device should have security options built-in.

Synchronizing Requirement:

In order to keep Epocrates and DynaMed type software up-to-date, you need to synchronize your Mobile device / PDA to your home desktop/laptop weekly.

It is recommended that you synchronize (which is essentially backing up your data) each day or every other day so all of the information on your device including personal calendar and contact information in your Mobile device / PDA is backed up onto your computer. When you synchronize, it is also a good idea to charge your device at the same time.

TIP: Be sure to keep your Mobile device / PDA charged and backed up onto your home computer. It is possible to lose data if the battery charge runs out.

ePocrates Rx FREE
Epocrates Essentials FREE  ( available in June 2010)
Peer-reviewed drug information including off-label indications and formularies in an easy to use format. Includes over 2800 drug monographs and the ability to check up to 30 different drugs for potential interacations. Also allows user to look up adult/peds dosing, contraindications/cautions, drug interactions, adverse reactions, Mfr/cost information and other information (i.e. pregnancy, lactation and mechanism of action). Drug database is updated daily. Memory requirement: 3.0 MB (3,000K) minimum + 10K per formulary selected.
