MAPS

(Minority Association of Pre-health Students)

Chapters

The University of California, Los AngelesBlack Pre-Health Organization (BPHO) is officially affiliated with the UCLA/ Drew Chapter of the Student National Medical Association as an SNMA-MAPS Chapter.  This year we have also added California State University, Dominguez-Hills as another MAPS Chapter.

Events

Annually we have an SNMA/MAPS mixer at the beginning of the school year in order for the undergraduates and medical students to become acquainted, and another end-of-the-year mixer to recap the year’s events. We maintain an open line of communication between the two organizations through elected liaisons and a mentorship program. SNMA members have served on MAPS medical student panels throughout the school year and provided invaluable information on how to successfully gain acceptance into medical school.  Students offer curriculum advice, MCAT studying strategies, AMCAS and personal statement review.  MAPS members also volunteer for several of our chapter projects and enthusiastically attend the pre-medical conference hosted by our chapter. They have ongoing community service of their own which includes a hypertension screening project that targets several communities in the Los Angeles area.

Future Plans

In addition, the UCLA/Drew Chapter of SNMA is also the parent chapter for University of California, Riverside's African Americans United in Science (AAUS), and we are in the process of establishing or strengthening several other MAPS chapters at undergraduate institutions in the Southern California area including: University of California, Santa Barbara, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), Loyola Marymount University (LMU), University of Southern California (USC), and University of California, Irvine (UCI).
